County Description - 1843
*Lowndes County, Georgia is situated in the south part of the state, and
contains 2,080 square miles. It is watered by Suwannee and Withlacoochee Rivers.
Capital, Troupsville.
There were in 1840: neat cattle 41,003, sheep 2,458, swine 20,349; wheat 2,333 bushels produced,
Indian corn 130,198, buckwheat 56,285, oats 1,172, potatoes 25,512, cotton 275,696 pounds;
5 stores, capital $40,000; 1 distillery, 9 grist mills, 5 saw mills.
1 school with 12 scholars.
Population: whites 4,394, slaves 1,177, free colored 3; total, 5,574.
